A group of New Zealand PWC enthusiasts is setting out from London on August 1st in hopes of breaking the world distance record for travel on a personal watercraft.

The trip, dubbed “The Ultimate Ride,” is being led by Jerome Burfoot, who circumnavigated New Zealand in 2006 in a benefit aimed at raising funds for cancer research, and who once again plans to draw attention to this cause. The Pacific proved a brutal force for competitors in the 2010 Long Beach to Catalina and Back APBA Offshore National Championships on July 18. Countless big-name pros would suffer breakdowns in the rough waters between Long Beach and Catalina Island, leaving those on stock machines to fare best. After a brutal crossing and heavy fog, Kim Bushong would hold on for the win, with Paul Pham taking second and Brian Steeves rounding out the top three.

The race hadn’t even begun when one of the early favorites, Chris MacClugage, would be forced to bow out due to mechanical problems. The stand-up PWC, better known as simply the Jet Ski or SuperJet, is responsible for a lot of history in the personal watercraft story. But thanks to pending emissions regulations, the stand-up’s last chapter (or at least last chapter in mass-production form) will soon be coming to a close.
