B1-FastBoat1-1010-bw-.jpgAfter waiting what seemed like endless months, Michael Bontoft has been named the world-record holder for electric boat racing.

Bontoft set the record, 98.806 mph, in October at Devil’s Lake in Lincoln City, Ore. He and the electric boat that he crafted were featured in a Daily News article in October 2008.

The Castle Rock man knew he had set a record during his run, but because of rules of the record’s governing board, he couldn’t announce the achievement.

“They don’t want somebody out there saying they broke the world record if they haven’t,” Bontoft said….  More info

Times are tough, so the Miami International Boat Show is going overboard to make it easier to buy a boat.

The 68th Miami show, which runs today through Monday at three sites, will have an Affordability Pavilion to help people find boats that can be financed for $300 or less per month.

The pavilion, which has appeared at other boat shows, will feature fishing boats, runabouts and personal watercraft such as an Angler 173F ($250 per month), the 20-foot Carolina Skiff 218DLV ($219), a Polar Kraft Bass Series TX175 Pro ($125) and the Yamaha VX Cruiser and VX Deluxe PWCs ($59).

Visitors to the Dubai Boat Show held at Mina Seyahi from 3rd – 7th of March will have the opportunity to experience what it’s like racing in the P1 Powerboat Grand Prix world series by riding on a themed motion simulator ride.

The simulator designed and manufactured by FX Simulation (UK) Ltd is themed and branded in the P1 livery. Inside, daredevil riders sit into the seats and can choose to experience two different races created from real footage of last year’s Powerboat Grand Prix. …  More info

The week before Labor Day always sees heavy boat traffic on the lake. But this year, event coordinator Janie Vogel says there will be a lot of fast boats on the lake. Real fast.

Vogel will be sorting out the many unfinished details of a week-long boating and racing event that will hit the shores later this year.

While Vogel didn’t know every detail, she knew the important ones.

“There will be six classes, plus a few really fast classes, said Vogel, “that will run from 75 miles-per-hour up to 200.”

Vogel said events will begin Tues. Sept. 1 with powerboat regattas and a fastest-boat competition on Thursday….  More info
