LIHU’E, Kaua’i — When the state has no money to fix a road to a popular park on Kaua’i, local residents don’t just sit on their hands. They bring in the heavy equipment and do it themselves.
Volunteers are making major repairs to open an access road to West Kaua’i’s premier state beach park, Polihale, which has been closed since December.

On calm waters under blue skies, Capt. Russell Amimoto’s crew of 12 brought the canoe in to a waiting crowd of family, friends and old salts at Sand Island.
One of the saltier ones on hand was Nainoa Thompson, president of the Polynesian Voyaging Society. He said that storms and overcast skies had been a big problem for the 12-day, 1,400-mile return leg of the voyage, but Amimoto and navigator Bruce Blankenfeld showed great skill and leadership in bringing the canoe home from Palmyra. The vessel had departed O’ahu for Palmyra on March 10 with a different crew, which flew back ahead of Hokule’a.

The University of Evansville student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers earned the title of Giant Killers Saturday, knocking off perennial concrete canoe champion the University of Wisconsin-Madison at this year’s ASCE Great Lakes Regional Competition in South Bend, Indiana.

The Hokule’a is expected to arrive home this afternoon or evening from the worst sailing weather in the Polynesian canoe’s history, said Mei Jeanne Wagner, Polynesian Voyaging Society spokeswoman.
She said that was the report from Nainoa Thompson, the society’s lead navigator, who remained home, but communicated daily with the canoe’s escort boat.
“The weather has been just awful the entire time,” she said, explaining that the canoe has encountered worse weather in the past, but never for an extended period, according to Thompson.
