WINONA, Minn. — There are no aluminum boats among the displays at the Art of the Canoe exhibit, which opened last week at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum here on the banks of the Mississippi River.

And why should there be? It would be like looking at an exhibit of aircraft wings, only less interesting.

Instead, the visitor gets a hands-on experience amid 14 canoes, ranging from the historically significant to the modern, as well as paddles, videos, historic postcards, Betsy Bowen prints, photographs and posters. MELBOURNE – Two outrigger canoes manned by 10 men and four women have set out from Port Welshpool in eastern Victoria to cross Bass Strait to raise money for cancer research.

It is hoped that the 14m-long outriggers will reach Bridport in 17 days and create history as the first outriggers ever to make the voyage.

The Kailua High School Canoe Club will host an imu fundraiser, with drop-off from 3 to 4:30 p.m. April 24 at the school campus. Pickup is the following day from 8 to 9:30 a.m.

The mail-in deadline to reserve a place is April 17 and the cost is $15 per large aluminum tray of food. Food must be thawed, seasoned and wrapped in foil.

Make checks payable to Kailua High School. Mail to Kailua High School, 451 Ulumanu Drive, Kailua, HI 96734. Write IMU on the envelope, include a telephone number and a self-addressed, stamped envelope. If ordering for more than one person, include their names.
