For the time being, that designation has been set aside for our coastal counterparts, those who have spent a lifetime developing the skills of various aquatic disciplines, from fishing and freediving to surfing and outrigger canoe paddling, and everything in between.
Although Colorado boasts some of the nation’s top whitewater kayakers, raft rowers and freshwater fly-fishermen, the temporary nature of aquatic abundance in our otherwise arid state doesn’t readily lend itself to the “waterman” label.

This was the most pure kind of racing, said David Duncan, who was watching the 22nd Kaua‘i Business Canoe Race, Sunday at the Hanama‘ulu Beach Park.
“The water is clear, the tide is super low and you have paddlers who have been in the closet and paddlers who have never paddled before coming out. This is what canoe paddling is all about,†said Duncan, whose wife Pua was part of the Kaua‘i Marriott ‘ohana.
