DAVID Smith and Luke Morrison combined to claim Australia¿s first gold medal in the men¿s K2 1000m race at the canoe sprint World Cup in Szeged, Hungary.

Smith and Morrison executed the perfect race to reel in the field after the 750m mark to not only claim the gold medal but secure their berth at the World championships later this year in Canada.

The Australian duo completed the course in a time of 3mins 38.001sec to lead home the Hungarian and German crews to claim a famous victory.

Fellow Australians Jacob Clear from Queensland and Murray Stewart (NSW) finished fourth.

LAHAINA — As the Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association shifted into full-go mode Saturday at the Naleieha Regatta — the second event on the calendar — host Kahana Canoe Club’s sophomore men made a statement.

As usual, Hawaiian Canoe Club dominated early and often, piling up 96 points — of a maximum 110 — through 22 events on the 42-race schedule at Hanakaoo (Canoe) Beach Park. Hawaiian finished with 157 points, fueled by 13 wins in 16 keiki division races. HCC won 25 races altogether.

VAIL — When Teva sandal inventor Mark Thatcher first dreamed up the idea for the world’s first “sport sandals,” he never envisioned how many sports his shoes would ultimately dip their toes into.

But that little ankle strap the former river guide attached to his flip-flops to keep them from floating away back in the early 1980s has hung on long enough for the soles to sprout some soul and branch out to any number of adventure activities — from rock climbing to trail running.

Those two sports, along with five others, are on display at this weekend’s eighth edition of the Teva Mountain Games in Vail. Scheduled today through Sunday in the streets and creeks of Vail Village, some 1,400 athletes are expected to compete for more than $100,000 in 21 disciplines, attracting the best of the best.
