LONG BEACH – Warmed by sunny skies, dozens of 6-person canoes sliced the still waters of Marine Stadium on Saturday for the 2009 Kahakai Sprints.

Part of the Charter Communications Long Beach Sea Festival of summer events, the annual outrigger canoe race draws teams from about two dozen clubs from San Diego to Santa Barbara. The day-long event is hosted by Long Beach’s Kahakai Outrigger Canoe Club and consists of more than 70 races on a 500-meter straightaway course in Marine Stadium.

LAHAINA — Kahana Canoe Club President Bobo Naleieha has been involved with the organization since he was a child during its organizational years in the mid-1970s.

Along with the Nuesca, Palakiko, Sadang and Pali families, the Naleieha clan launched KCC at a small fishing village north of Kaanapali, and young Bobo got a firsthand look at his forefathers nurturing the culture of the canoe during this time.

Now, some 33 years later, Bobo is the “Papa,” and fostering the culture of the outrigger canoe continues…  Details 

Proving that seconds can be just as valuable as firsts, the Kailua Canoe Club won the John D. Kaupiko Regatta yesterday at Ke’ehi Lagoon.

It was the sixth regatta of the O’ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association season, and Kailua’s second win of the season.

“To me, it just means that we’re hanging in there,” Kailua head coach Kathy Erwin said. “We had a lucky day. We had a couple of squeaker first places, where we just barely won. And then we had a lot of different crews score points.”

Kailua scored 88 points in the 39-race regatta.
