Canary Islands – At last the waiting game is over… As I write this, the 70 or so rowers competing in this year’s Atlantic Rowing Race should be completing their first month at sea, by now well used to life on the ocean, settled in and adjusted to the routine they’ve chosen to get them through their lengthy time out on the waves. Instead, the might of Mother Nature has spoken, and the tiny rowing boats have been limited to short trips out from the harbour of San Sebastian in La Gomera, as prevailing weather conditions meant that it has been much too dangerous for them to set off. Frustrating though it is has been, crews have had to play a harsh waiting game, with most taking the decision to return home over Christmas, leaving their boats behind in the Canaries. Today however, the story changed.
