LAHAINA – There will be a new kid on the block – a 62-foot, double-hulled canoe that, like a baby in gestation, will make its debut in about nine months.
Tha Lahaina-based group Hui O Wa’a Kaulua is putting the finishing touches on the Mo’okiha O Pi’ilani, recognized as Maui’s first and only transoceanic voyaging canoe. Hokuleʻa is a replica of a Polynesian double-hulled voyaging canoe (waʻa kaulua). It was built by the Polynesian Voyaging Society to promote the cultural revitalization of Hawaiians, and support the theory of Polynesians as masterful navigators in the Pacific. A year after Hokuleʻa was launched in 1975, she voyaged from Hawaii to Tahiti and back without the use of modern navigational instruments. Since that voyage, Hokuleʻa has completed nine more voyages to Micronesia, Polynesia, Japan, Canada, and the United States, all using ancient wayfinding techniques of celestial navigation.

A woman was flown to Miami from the lower Keys over the weekend after she was wounded by a jumping fish while kayaking off Big Pine Key.
Karri Larson, 46, and a friend were kayaking Sunday evening when the fished jumped out of the water and bit her in the chest. When her companion called for help and he told the emergency dispatcher that he couldn’t get the two person kayak back to shore without causing her further injury, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
