Clean waves at Hells mouth Abersoch
Vikings, cowgirls and neon hippies raced through Alexander Valley in kayaks and canoes Saturday at the Great Russian River Race.
About 250 paddlers plunged through the river, with 55 competitors starting at Alexander Valley Bridge for a 15-mile race, and the rest starting at Rio Linda Beach, five miles from the finish line.

The 2011 Great Russian River Race comes at a great time for both Healdsburg and Sonoma County. It is a way to raise awareness of our river and for all of us to commit to recognizing “The River†as a gift we overlook. To most people, the 100-foot albizia growing on a West Maui family’s property was just a big tree. The young boy in the family looked at it and envisioned a canoe.
“Can we build a canoe?” he asked his father.
“I don’t have the knowledge or equipment to do that,” the man replied, “but maybe one day someone will come and ask for that tree to make one.”
