An accident in 1998 left George Rickman with his right leg amputated, after he fell 40 feet at a construction site.

Rickman said he thought he never would recover from the accident, but after receiving prosthetics and a little encouragement, he not only rebounded, but began competing for national kayak championships.

More than two dozen men’s and women’s teams paddle 20 miles round-trip in the 40th Annual Whitey Harrison Classic. Spectators watch from vantage points up and down the coast.
