KAHULUI – Na Kai Ewalu may be getting some final closure after a fire in November of 1996 destroyed the club’s hale and nearly its entire fleet of canoes.
They made a quick recovery from the blaze, replacing all but one canoe within eight months.

While the sport originally hails from Hawaii, outrigger canoeing has gained a very strong foothold along the Californian coast. This weekend will be a good opportunity for people unfamiliar with the water sport to get an up-close look at it.
The Noah Kalama Outrigger Classic will take place from about 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, July 14, at the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier.
