First Descents, the outdoor adventure non-profit benefiting young adults with cancer, is announcing that Teva has stepped up as the sole financial sponsor of FD’s final program of 2012. The Los Angeles Conservation Corps celebrated the second season of its “Paddle the L.A. River” program this week with a kayaking trip led by its executive director and a local assemblyman.

More than 1,000 people made the 1.5-mile trip along the river this summer, a spokesman for the group said, and organizers are hoping to expand the program next year.

Becoming a powerlifter taught me to be fearless. Then a serious injury from lifting, followed by surgery and the loss of my beloved sport taught me to respect my own limits. One of the most painful parts of the experience was losing that bad-ass sense that I could do anything; after all, I got hurt precisely because I didn’t think it could happen.
