One of the highlights of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance weekend — and, in fact, one of the highlights in all of motor sports — are the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races. It’s the reason that most people schlep through Ferrari-laden traffic jams on the peninsula this time of year. Well, that and the Quail event.

Few events offer the kind of opportunity to see classic competition-prepped race cars compete like the Monterey races do. Started in 1974, the races bring cars and drivers from around the world to show off on the storied tarmac of Laguna Seca Raceway. It’s an amateur event, so anyone with a classic racer can join in with the likes of industry giant Vic Edelbrock Jr., Timo Glock, Mario Andretti and Stirling Moss around the famed “Corkscrew” turns on the track.

Though the rules vary from race to race, one regulation reigns above all …  Details & Pictures

Steve Earle looked like a kid in a candy store Friday as the 36th annual Rolex Monterey Automobile Races kicked off its three-day run at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca under spectacular sunny skies and a large opening-day crowd.

I ran across Steve and his wife Debbie at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering on the pristine grounds of Quail Lodge. Each year, there is a Historics to Quail run and the Earles were checking out the fabulous display and even better food that make up The Quail.

This year, a combination of classes in the pre-war era made the trek (with California Highway Patrol escort) from the track to Quail Lodge and back. It’s a traffic-stopper.

The North American debut of the 2010 Porsche Panamera – and 145 historic Porsches – headline the 2009 edition of the world’s most prestigious vintage motorsports event

At the upcoming 36th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races, held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on August 14-16, the sound of the initial stirrings of over 450 race cars will be complimented by the exquisite growl of the newest, most daring and most advanced vehicle Porsche has produced to date, the 2010 Porsche Panamera gran turismo.

“This year’s Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races presents the perfect opportunity to demonstrate that Porsche’s DNA, its competitive spirit and drive for perfection, runs from the very first 356, Porsche No. 1 up through today’s all-new Panamera,” said Detlev von Platen, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America…  Details

A total of 450 entries have been accepted for the 36th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races, one of vintage motorsport’s most revered racing traditions, set for August 14-16 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Of those, 145 are Porsche cars, helping to celebrate Porsche as this year’s featured marque and lending live-action perspective on the company’s storied racing heritage, which includes remarkable cars made famous by legendary drivers.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the iconic Porsche 917, and fittingly, four 917Ks will take to the track. Three of those are re-uniting from the Gulf Wyer Team, and their former Executive Director …  Details
