IN 1987, ON A 15.5-MILE TEST OVAL in Ehra-Lessien, Germany, a 469-hp twin-turbo Porsche 911 went 211 mph. Only it wasn’t technically a Porsche—it did not wear a Stuttgart VIN and was known legally as a Ruf CTR. Future of LMP1 class for WEC, Le Mans in doubt after latest defection
Porsche will quit the LMP1 class of the World Endurance Championship at the end of this year ahead of a move to Formula E.
The German manufacturer is leaving the top flight of sports car racing after four seasons with the 919 Hybrid, one year before the end of its existing commitment through to the end of 2018. On May 28th 1983, a 25 year old German Racing driver named Stefan Bellof drove a Porsche 956 around the Nürburgring Nordschliefe in 6:11.13, a record that stands to this day, and one that doesn’t look like it’ll ever be beaten.
The Nurburgring track length in this video is 12.9 miles and the same length used today. The GP circuit is different.
