Automobile Rally Car Drifting – Rhys Millen sets 2WD Time Attack class record at Pikes Peak

The 2009 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is in the books. Reigning king of the hill Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima again took top honors in the unlimited class but failed to break his own record with the new Suzuki SX4 hill-climb special. In fact, he fell 14 seconds shy of his record 2007 run with a 10:15.368. He did manage to beat Marcus Gronholm and Timo Alanne in one of Ford’s Rallycross Fiestas, which only managed an 11:28.963 as it crossed the line with its right rear tire in flames.

One of two categories that did see records broken was the 2WD Time Attack for production-based cars. Here, Rhys Millen found that the confidence he gained from his practice runs earlier in the week was not misplaced. Automobile Rally Car – Rally America: Travis Pastrana wins 2009 New England Forest Rally

Travis Pastrana was handed his fourth win of the season at the New England Forest Rally Saturday by his teammate, to extend his lead in the Rally America national championship.

Subaru Rally Team USA’s Pastrana entered Round 6 with a 21-point lead and said his strategy from the start was to avoid taking unnecessary risks and get his car to the finish in one piece.

The roads on this event are generally wide and fast, but strewn with massive rocks that can do big damage to competition cars.

pikesWhat began on August 10, 1916, as an automobile race featuring Barney Oldfield and Eddie Rickenbacker to help promote a new highway to the top of a Colorado mountain will present its 87th edition on Sunday, July 19, as America’s second oldest motor sports race, behind only the fabled Indy 500.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, with almost 50 auto or truck drivers and 115 motorcycle racers in 11 divisions,including automotive, semi truck, exhibition, open wheel, super stock car, pro truck and motorcycle classes, will attack the 14,110-foot peak in one of the nation‘s most exciting sports events.

The Race to the Clouds takes its competitors to the summit of Pikes Peak, a distance of 19.99 km (12.42 miles) over 156 turns, climbing 1,439 meters (4,721 ft) from the start at Mile 7 on Pikes Peak Highway at 2,862 meters (9,390 ft) on grades averaging 7% over both gravel and paved sections…  Details
