Two-time Motocross champion Travis Pastrana will make seven Nationwide Series starts in 2011… 

Doing stunts like jumping out of airplanes without a parachute or ramp-to-ramp jumps is pretty cool, but I also think I really will like this NASCAR thing.

NASCAR marks the spot for X Games star Travis Pastrana.

The 11-time X Games gold medalist and motocross, supercross, Rally America and action sports athlete will make his second stock-car start in today’s (4:30 p.m.) 3 Amigos Organic Blanco 100 K&N West series event at Phoenix International Raceway. He finished sixth in his debut in the development series last month at California’s Irwindale Speedway.

Hendrick Motorsports has cornered the market on high-priced talent.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was once again the center of attention in the Nascar universe last week. He won the pole for the Daytona 500 before a wreck during practice pushed him to the back of the pack to start the race. It was the 10th anniversary of his father’s death, which occurred in a crash on the final lap of Daytona. A moment of silence was planned for lap three of this year’s race as spectators held three fingers in the air for the late driver of the No. 3 Chevrolet.

The low point was three years ago at this very place, when the Wood Brothers failed to qualify for the Daytona 500 for the first time in more than four decades. They were outside the top 35 in driver points, they lost a gear in pole qualifying, and they didn’t finish high enough in their qualifying event to make the sport’s biggest race. It felt, team co-owner Eddie Wood said, like somebody had died. Walking around the garage area afterward, other competitors would drop their gazes rather than look him in the eye.

“Until you go through it,” he said, “you can’t put it into words.”
