Teams of racers, not manufacturers using the sport as a promotional aid, are the future of the sport

On a sunny Saturday in July 1977, 26 formula one cars lined up on the grid for the British grand prix at Silverstone. There were 15 different makes of car represented, powered by five different types of engine, 15 of them were Ford-Cosworths. The race had originally attracted 36 entries and they had to be whittled down to 30 who would be allowed to attempt to qualify by the harsh process of pre-qualifying on Thursday morning. Grand prix motor racing was in rude health.

Race organizers say Belgian cycling star Tom Boonen will not be welcome at this year’s Tour de France after his latest positive drug test.

The 28-year-old former world champion tested positive for cocaine last month for the second time in less than a year. Boonen has been fined and suspended indefinitely by his Quick Step team and risks a suspension of up to six months from cycling’s world governing body…  Details

Renault joined Ferrari in threatening to withdraw from next season’s Formula One world championship because of the budget cap imposed by the sport’s governing body.

Renault said Wednesday it is frustrated that FIA adopted the new regulations while ignoring alternative plans proposed by the teams.

Like Ferrari a day earlier, Renault said it will only take part in the 2010 championship if FIA revokes the new regulations – putting pressure on the ruling body ahead of a meeting between all parties at a Heathrow airport hotel on Friday.

FIA president Max Mosley is leading the FIA’s push to curb costs, with a voluntary $60-million budget cap being made available to teams. Teams that don’t adhere to the cap will not receive the same technical freedom…  Details

After missing the season’s first three races because of a lack of sponsorship money, the 1986 Indianapolis 500 winner announced Wednesday he has completed a one-race deal to put veteran Spanish driver Oriol Servia in the cockpit of his No. 17 car for this year’s 500.

“Obviously, we’re pleased that we could be back at least for the 500,” Rahal said in a telephone interview. “We’ve got a lot of work to do, we’ve got a good driver and we’ve got good people on the team. But we have a lot to think about.”  …  Details
