Pumping his fist as he took the checkered flag and breaking down in tears when he was done, Helio Castroneves capped a perfect month of May with the biggest win of all Sunday at the Indianapolis 500.

Castroneves became the ninth driver to win the historic race three times, and his timing couldn’t have been better. Just 5 1/2 weeks ago, he was aquitted of most charges at a federal tax evasion trial, and the remaining count was thrown out on Friday.

Instead of going to prison for as long as six years, Castroneves pulled his red-and-white machine into Victory Lane at the Brickyard. No wonder he was sobbing when team owner Roger Penske leaned in to give him a hug.

“Thanks for giving my life back,” the 34-year-old Brazilian told his boss, who earned his record 15th win at Indy…  Details

Ferrari rebounded from its worst start to a Formula One season at the Monaco Grand Prix. Now it may just be on the verge of overtaking Red Bull as Brawn GP’s main challenger.

Kimi Raikkonen finished third on Sunday for the Italians’ first podium of the season, while Felipe Massa was just one place behind to bring home 11 points – the scuderia’s best single-race haul after six races.

“Maybe we had the car to win the race if we start on pole position,” Massa, who set the 78-lap street race’s fastest lap time, said. “We still need a couple of races to be sure we are the second strongest team.”

Massa said the team’s strategy was perfect on a …  Details

Lewis Hamilton says his hopes of defending the Formula One championship title ended Saturday at the Monaco Grand Prix – the same track that provided a dramatic victory on the way to last season’s overall win.

Hamilton finished 16th in qualifying after sliding into the Mirabeau corner 11 minutes into the first qualifying session, but was demoted to last on the grid because his McLaren needed a gearbox change after the accident.

A dejected Hamilton, who is already 32 points behind leader Jenson Button who took pole, hung his head as stewards removed his car before eventually returning to the garage.

“We’re not challenging for …  Details

Brawn GP’s Jenson Button won the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, capturing his fifth victory in six races to extend his Formula One championship lead.

Button finished 7.6 seconds ahead of teammate Rubens Barrichello at the famed street circuit race for his fourth start-to-finish victory of the season.

Button leads with 51 points. Barrichello has 35 and Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull, who crashed out after 16 laps, is third with 23 points.

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen earned Ferrari its first top-three finish of the season by taking third. Felipe Massa was fourth for Ferrari ahead of Red Bull’s Mark Webber, who took his points tally to 19.5.

Brawn GP became the first team in its inaugural season to …  Details
