In an unsurprising turn of events, Chrysler has pulled its sponsorship of Sam Hubinette’s drifting team as part of the company’s restructuring plan. The bankrupt automaker’s Formula Drift program was run by Shaun Carlson’s NuFormz Racing, which began with Mopar in 2002, competing in the NHRA Sport Compact division. The team eventually made their way into drifting in 2004, where Hubinette captured the championship behind the wheel of a Dodge Viper during Formula D’s inaugural season. Hubinette went onto several podium finishes, placing second overall in 2006 and claiming runner-up finishes in both 2005 and 2008.

PROFESSIONAL DRIFTING returns to Punchestown Racecourse later this month with the Prodrift Punchestown event taking place on May 30th and 31st.
The two-day event will feature some of the best drifters from across Europe competing in two major championships.

Since Tokyo Auto Salon founder Daijiro Inada got together with friend and former GT racer, Keiichi Tsuchiya (a. k. a. the Drift King), to create the D1 Grand Prix professional drift series in 2001, drifting has become arguably the most exciting motorsport in the world.
Now in its ninth full season in Japan, the sideways-sliding action is already underway abroad with veteran Nomuken (a. k. a. Ken Nomura) winning 2009’s initial D1 event at Japan’s Ebisu Circuit in his Skyline ER34. More recently, Youichi Imamura finished first in round two at the Autopolis in Oita Prefecture on Kyushu Island. The D1GP continues to grow at the professional and amateur levels with a spin-off called the D1 Street Legal series. The United Kingdom, New Zealand and Malaysia also host their own satellite series.
