BRISTOL, Tenn. – With a relentless work ethic, endless supply of courage and iconic nickname, Dale Pulde helped to revolutionize the sport of drag racing.
Pulde has seen and done about everything over his star-studded journey, yet he admits to being shocked at the transformation of Bristol Dragway. The driver of the “War Eagle†was inducted into the Legends of Thunder Valley Sunday morning before final eliminations for the National Hot Rod Association Thunder Valley Nationals.Â
“I came to Bristol for the first time in 1968 when I was 18 years old,†Pulde said. “When I saw this dragstrip, I was like “Wow.â€Â It was unlike anything I had ever seen.â€

Drag racing in the UK hasn’t attracted the huge following it has in the US, but meetings such as The Main Event at Santa Pod Raceway, Britain’s premier dragstrip, are gaining the sport more followers here each year.
Scheduled for the Bank Holiday weekend of May 22 to 25, The Main Event is the first round of the European Drag Racing Championship and is claimed to feature the largest race entry anywhere in Europe. What is wrong with the American racing scene? As I watch NASCAR, I get to the point that I enjoy it less and less, as the season goes on. I only watch the IRL/CART during the Indy 500 and only because I’ve always watched the 500. I have been an avid drag racer and have promoted the sport and use to follow Pro Stock faithfully.
Now it seems almost uninteresting, I’ve moved to following the Top Fuel and Funny Car ranks, and pray I get to see a Sportsman class race. Yet, I still love Sports Car racing and I’ve even gotten back into watching Formula 1.
