Robert Hight had one driver to beat to make the Countdown: his boss, John Force

Robert Hight faced a tall order at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, the last race of the NHRA regular season, to rally from 12th in points into the top 10 and the Countdown to 1. He needed to win a lot of rounds and have certain competitors lose at the right times to make the Funny Car playoff.

Was one of those competitors his boss — 14-time champion and drag racing icon John Force?

It was a beautiful day for the biggest event of the year in drag racing, the US Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Clermont, Indiana. The 55th running of The Big Go offered plenty of drama and exciting side by side drag racing reaching speeds well over 300 MPH. Ashley Force Hood, Tony Schumacher, Jeg Coughlin and Hector Arana hoisted the coveted U.S. Nationals Wallys in victory lane late Monday afternoon.

Kenny Bernstein’s sigh of relief in finding sponsorship would’ve been enough to blow out the candles on his 65th birthday cake if it had any.

His concerns over finding a successor for Budweiser on his son Brandon’s Top Fuel dragster were settled when the former NHRA champion and current team owner announced Sunday that Internet used car seller Copart Inc. will sponsor the car in 2010. Coming a day after team owner Don Prudhomme said he would sell assets in Snake Racing or risk not competing next season, Bernstein’s deal could become a model to teams to follow in a rough economy.

Tomorrow may seem like just another weekday, but for one drag racing legend, it’s the start of a new beginning. “Big Daddy” Don Garlits plans on returning to NHRA drag racing for the first time in nearly six years by entering the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.

Although Garlits built a name for himself piloting Top Fuel dragsters to 17 world championship titles and 144 national event wins, his latest ride — a Dodge Challenger Drag Pack — means he’ll be running within the NHRA’s Stock class.
