Welcome to the dirty ol Wedge in Newport Beach, one of the craziest surf sports anywhere. Sadly, many people have been hurt, paralyzed and even killed attempting to ride this wave.
Bruce Brow described the Wedge perfectly in his classic film “The Endless Summer” as a place “where you can catch a wave you didn’t even want”.
The waves here can get well over 20ft and form some amazing barrels. Yes, the Wedge get’s super crowded but if you can find that needle in the haystack you’ll be rewarded with a lifelong memory.
Bruce Meyers was hanging out at Pismo Beach on California’s Central Coast one afternoon in 1963 when he saw something that both blew his mind and changed his life: a handful of old, stripped-down cars bouncing across the sand.
It sure would be fun to get behind the wheel of one of those, Meyers thought, if only they weren’t so ugly and didn’t appear so uncomfortable. He built his own solution: a “dune buggy” fashioned out of lightweight fiberglass mounted on four oversized tires with two bug-eyed looking headlights and a blindingly bright paint job.

Teahupo’o is a reef break. The swells mainly break left, but the outer reef also creates right breaks that surfers must be cautious of when paddling out. Teahupo’o is also renowned for the consistent number of barrels it delivers. It is a rewarding location and is widely regarded as being on the ‘must-surf’ list of every enthusiastic surfer. However, only experienced surfers in peak physical condition should attempt Teahupo’o; heavy waves combined with a shallow shoreline can result in serious injuries and even death in a wipeout.
