Riley Laing made a name for himself in 2016 when, at just 17, he surfed enormous waves at Red Bull Cape Fear. Although his teenage mate Russell Bierke ended up winning the event, Laing turned more than his fair share of heads — footage of his petrified parents watching on from the rocks beamed around the world. He’s since been busy chasing swell and charging exotic waves around the world. Contrary to popular belief, SUP surfing is not easy.
My first foray into SUP surfing ended with humiliation. I could barely manage to balance on my board–much less actually catch waves–and eventually got tired of falling and paddling back to the beach in shame. After spending more than a decade longboarding, I had mistakenly assumed my transition to SUP would be a breeze. I was wrong.
