Considering it wasn’t as big or as consistent as last January’s Super Swell Saturday event, yesterday’s session at Pe’ahi was as clean as any surfer could hope for this side of Maui glass. And when the sets came, they came hard, sending at least one charger to the hospital. And while it wasn’t historic size-wise, Tuesday did reveal some historic moments — like Francisco Porcella packing the best backside barrel ever out there, Kai Lenny celebrating twin baby girls with a progressive smoke show, and Jaws loc’s Billy Kemper and Albee Layer getting as deeply pitted as ever. Surfing nr 10s, Crazy Surf spot in Northern Scotland. I had dreamt about this moment, I had surfed it 10years ago an all I wanted was to surf it again.. Its such a dangerous wave, such a heavy wave on how it breaks, on how the reef sticks out.. if you fall and get hurt you are in the middle of nowhere, far from civilisation, no one will get you.. As bad as you want to get the waves of your life, you always the danger is always in the back of your mind. – Nic Von Rupp

Tahiti doesn’t even seem real. It’s almost too gorgeous, too picturesque; sorta like a CGI version of reality, or the image results of a Wikipedia entry for “paradise.” And that’s true from a surfing perspective, too. Many of the waves are near-perfect, all breaking in some of the bluest water on earth, with towering junglescapes looming over white, black, and pink(!) sand beaches. Of course, Teahupo’o comes to mind when most surfers think about Tahiti. It is, without a doubt, the island’s marquee surf spot – albeit unfathomable for mere mortals when it’s anything above overhead (and sometimes less). But there’s a lot more that Tahiti has to offer than the End of the Road. Hit play above for a visual tribute to Tahiti – brought to you by longtime expat lensman on the island, Tim McKenna – which shows highlights from super sessions at Chopes, along with a showcase of some of the lesser-known breaks, too.
