Modern surfing is at one of the most interesting crossroads in its history at least since the shortboard revolution of the ’60s and ’70s. Maybe ever. For instance, surfers across the world are grappling with such things as the proliferation of wave pool technology (is it really surfing?), and what Olympic inclusion means for the sport. And like 2017 before it, 2018 will undoubtedly be an eventful step forward in such matters. On 9 December 2017 Secret Spot Surf Shop ran their first ‘King of the Point’ surf contest.
Held at one of the best point breaks on the East Coast of England, with a waiting period spanning the whole winter, it really was a competition by surfers, for surfers.
The end of the year is always a great time for reflection and looking at our lives to figure out how we can be better people and do better things.
That’s no different for surfers, especially given our innate connection to the ocean and the planet. We directly derive joy from the earth and should be the ones who are the ocean’s stewards as well as offering others the peace and tranquility surfing gives us.
