We meet the expats who left home to live amid the foul weather and epic waves of Ireland, and who’ve helped put Irish big-wave surfing on the map. Two of the hearty souls Maguire’s talking about are South African Barry Mottershead and Australian Noah Lane. Both men came to Ireland as surf tourists, but couldn’t seem to bring themselves to board the plane back home.
Surfers are cursed, doomed for all eternity with an undying lust for adventure. We feel compelled to get the hell outta dodge whenever a pulse pops up on the forecast, no matter how far-flung the location, and book a plane ticket – wives, husbands, and work be damned.
But the travel curse isn’t such a bad thing. It allows us to explore strange lands, mingle with exotic cultures, and (hopefully) score topnotch surf. And sometimes, those adventures are in places where one might not consider your stereotypical surfing destination. Hence, this list: … More
