kayak-scPatience paid off at Steamer Lane on Sunday as conditions picked up just in time for the finals of the 23rd annual Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival.

Chris Harvey from Guernsey, England earned himself the first-place medal in the High Performance men’s division to repeat as champion.

“I felt relieved. The past two days haven’t been very good, and I felt both relieved and excited that the waves really shaped up for the finals,” Harvey said.

Friday marked the end of the registration period for the Billabong XXL Global big-wave awards, regarded as the Gold Standard in Big Wave surfing prizes.

The annual contest, which awards a prize purse of more than $130,000 for surfers who ride the biggest waves during the previous year, traditionally has been dominated by surfers from California and Hawaii who ride big waves in the same locations.

Which is well and good, except that almost no big waves to speak of came to California or Hawaii this year. So, say you’re a big-wave surfer and you want to win a big-wave contest, because that contest has a $50,000 first-place prize, and because you have almost no other source of income, but the waves have all but dried up in the big-wave hot spots. I spend time in the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum located on the cliff overlooking Steamers Lane each time I go to Santa Cruz.  It’s small but almost spirtual for me to see the history of surfing.

The Santa Cruz Surfing Club Preservation Society is a nonprofit entity that was created in part  to preserve the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum. It is asking for donations to help maintain the Museum and even expand the hours of the popular landmark.
