Kelly Slater, Stephanie Gilmore and Aaron Hadlow have been nominated for the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year.

The winners of the 2009 Laureus World Sports Awards will receive their Awards individually at a series of presentations during May and June.

Laureus and its Partners have made the decision that due to the current economic situation it would be inappropriate to stage a full-scale Laureus World Sports Awards Ceremony at this time. Accordingly for this year Laureus will forego its usual spring celebration…  Details

Hawaii’s Carissa Moore, a perennial giant-killer who will probably become a world surfing champion not long after she turns pro, graces the cover of the May issue of Surfer magazine — and deservedly so.

How special is that? Very, considering that surfing magazines devote little space to women’s surfing and almost never put a female on the cover. Moore, 16, is the first female surfer to appear on the cover of Surfer since four-time world champion Lisa Andersen in 1995, and only the third overall.

West Australian Taj Burrow has joined the exodus of surfing stars out of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach as the competition prepares to crown a champion on Friday.

Third seed and 2007 winner Burrow was eliminated by Gold Coast surfer Jay Thompson when round two heats resumed on Thursday.

Already nine-time world champ Kelly Slater and Aussie No.2 seed Bede Durbidge have been bounced out of the early rounds.

It leaves fourth seed and current tour points leader Joel Parkinson as the highest ranked surfer left in the competition, which is expected to be completed on Friday with the quarter-finals, semis and final…  Details
