The ASP WQS 6-Star Estoril Quiksilver Pro 2009 moved closer to its business today as Guincho’s consistent beachbreak delivered some excellent three foot (one meter) waves allowing organisers to wrap up Round 3 and six heats of Round 4, event outsiders creating major upsets for an exciting day of world class surfing. While current ASP Top 45 surfers Tiago Pires (Ericeira, PRT) and Michael Picon (Capbreton, FRA) suffered early eliminations, ASP WQS rising campaigners stole the show to advance through to the first Man-on-man heats of the event planned to kick off tomorrow at Carcavelos, main location of the Estoril Quiksilver Pro.

Marco Giorgi (URY), 21, flew the South American colours today, the newcomer dominating Day 3 of the Estoril Quiksilver Pro 2009 with exceptional surfing. Giorgi, who placed equal 5th in the recent ASP WQS 4-Star event in France, was unstoppable …  Details

Save The Waves Coalition presents its third annual Life Is A Wave benefit event, a yearly celebration of coastal environmentalism through music, art, film, and community activism. Life Is A Wave 2009 will roll in on May 14 from 6pm ’til midnight, once again at 111 Minna Gallery in downtown San Francisco. The multimedia event will feature live music from several innovative new bands, including Bay Area heavyweights Bayonics, as well as the fast-rising Kapakahi – both known for their dynamic mix of world beats and highly energetic live shows. Opening will be Clif Bar Inc.’s own Dung Beetles, along with DJs M3, OmarEtch, and DJ Paul.

This year Save The Waves will honor Reef founder, International Surfing Association President and philanthropist Fernando Aguerre as recipient of the 2009 Wave Saver Award, for his work and support defending coastlines around the world.

High school surfers from Maui County will be able to officially represent their schools for the first time on Saturday in the Maui Interscholastic Surf Championships at Hookipa Beach Park.

The first unofficial meet between Maui County high schools took place in 1994, and the state Board of Education approved surfing as a high school sport in 2003.

Surfing teams remain clubs, not varsity teams, including at Saturday’s meet, which will have 10 schools represented — Baldwin, Hana, Kaahumanu Hou, Kamehameha Maui, King Kekaulike, Lahainaluna, Maui, Maui Preparatory Academy, Seabury Hall and St. Anthony…  Details
