Billabong Destin and Ride On Surf School announce that nearly 50 young surfers competed in the 1st annual Billabong Grom Comp on Saturday, May 16th at the Pompano Joe’s Beach Park in Miramar Beach with over 150 spectators cheering them on. The inaugural Billabong Grom Comp was a surfing competition for young surfers ages 12 and under and featured four divisions–Super Groms ages 8 and under, Mini Groms ages 10 and under, Groms ages 12 and under, and Senior Groms ages 14 and under. No surfing experience was required for competitors and surfboards were provided for participants that needed them.

This Memorial Day weekend, the Santa Cruz Longboard Union hosted a gathering of surf clubs from up and down the coast of California to celebrate its silver anniversary –” 25 years.
“A mellow competition, social gathering with very contestable waves,” was how Longboard Union President Pete Noble, described the conditions as the longboarders, stand up paddle boarders, tandem surfers, and paddle racers, vied to accumulate points for their surf clubs.

The term “waterman” is not readily associated with Coloradans.
Not yet, anyway, in this landlocked state.
For the time being, that designation has been set aside for our coastal counterparts, those who have spent a lifetime developing the skills of various aquatic disciplines, from fishing and freediving to surfing and outrigger canoe paddling, and everything in between.
Although Colorado boasts some of the nation’s top whitewater kayakers, raft rowers and freshwater fly-fishermen, the temporary nature of aquatic abundance in our otherwise arid state doesn’t readily lend itself to the “waterman” label.
