The 3rd Stop of the 2009 Rip Curl GromSearch fueled by H20 Overdrive took to the Right Coast last weekend to determine who has the street cred out of the mid-Atlantic’s finest 16/under rippers. With contestable peaks, all the heavy hitters in attendance, and that same polished platinum competitive platform known as the Rip Curl GromSearch, the stage was set for battle.

The 16 and under boys started the day as Nick Rupp flared through his early rounds to make the finals, but young Outer Banks local Julian Payne was all about holding home court. Amidst low tides and drained-out runners, Julian’s local knowledge played to his advantage as he grabbed the win, the cash, the trophy, and the bragging rights to the Rip Curl GromSearch OBX.

 Red Bull Rivals is a one day surf event pitting Oahu’s legendary shores (North Shore and South Shore) against each other.  Top Surfers from each shore will battle it out in a head-to-head surf competition for ultimate island bragging rights.  To keep things fair, the event will be held on the Eastside of Oahu at Sandy Beach (Neutral Territory). 

No major surf event has been held at this popular surf hangout location since the Gotcha Pro back in the Early 1980s.  Besides bragging rights, teams will compete for a territory advantage in next year’s competition and the losing team has to give the winning team their surfboards (similar to “racing for pink slips”)…  Details

It was a fitting end to an event steeped in a mix of camaraderie and tough competition as Team USA took the overall gold medal today over Team France at the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games presented by Monster Energy in Costa Rica. It was the first time that the Americans have won an overall gold medal in since the 1996 World Surfing Games in Huntington Beach, California.

From the opening heats of the Games at Playa Hermosa that began eight days ago, Team USA appeared committed and focused, as they competed against 34 other teams for a spot on the podium. With the final day of competition looming overhead, Team USA stood firm and was able to place five or their eight team members into the three finals, hence becoming the team to beat.
