Billabong Pro Maui ON in Pumping Surf at Honolua Bay

Thousands of spectators and surfers are flocking to Hawaii’s beaches to see the biggest waves in years crash ashore.

Heavy traffic backed up for miles yesterday along roads leading to Oahu’s North Shore. Some of the world’s most daring surfers took on the powerful and dangerous waves, which forecasters say could reach heights of 50ft (15 metres) by tomorrow.

After a renewed flurry of speculation about the never-say-die rebel tour, which was sparked by a piece on the ASL website last week, here’s what we were able to ascertain this morning: Taj is definitely staying with the ASP. Bede is “probably” staying. Andy is returning to the ASP (as reported on Surfline). Shane Dorian has not been approached and would not consider it if he was. And according to ASP CEO Brodie Carr, Dane Reynolds and Clay Marzo are both committed to the establishment.

That leaves Bruce, Mitch Coleborn (who wasn’t answering his phone), Ry Craike and the lead rebel himself, Kelly Slater, yet to confirm which way they’ll go  …  Details

Contestants of the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau, fueled by Monster Energy, were calling the waves at Waimea Bay today bigger than any contested the past three times this event ran. But organizers opted to employ patience and wait for tomorrow as surface conditions are forecast to improve with wave size continuing in the giant range. Wave face heights were in the 25- to 40-foot range today and rising. It made for a dramatic warm-up that thousands flocked to the North Shore of Oahu to witness.
