Reporting from Curanipe, Chile – When the earthquake hit last weekend, this surfing hamlet was hosting a competition from its signature point: the rock of San Pedro, splashed with a colorful mural of a surfer and partyers on the beach.

A week later, young Chilean volunteers and environmentalists from the United States arrived in Curanipe, unified in their passion for surfing and a yearning to help this ravaged stretch of coast.

Ohope surfer Dylan Barnfield barnstormed his way to a national title today (Sunday 7th March) winning the Open Men’s Division at the Hyundai National Longboard Championships held at Whangamata Beach over the weekend.

The surf remained large for the final day of the event with 2.0m waves hammering the Whangamata Beach as well as the remaining surfers in the event.

east-coast-surfThe best professional and amateur surfing talent in the United States will converge to compete for a $10,000 prize purse in the scholarship, open shortboard an open longboard divisions.  The 2010 East Coast Scholastic Surfing Championships, being held from March 26-28, 2010 at the New Smyrna Beach Inlet, is quickly approaching. The event will feature four-man heats, computerized scoring and ASP level judges. Online registration is now up and running and the event is also featuring a free event and banquet for contestants on Friday, March 26, with local reggae-funk band The Burnin Smyrnans beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Smyrna Surfari Clubhouse.

SNAPPER ROCKS, Queensland/Australia (Saturday, March 6, 2010) – Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, reigning three-time ASP Women’s World Champion and defending event winner, has taken out the 2010 Roxy Pro Gold Coast in punchy two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at Snapper Rocks over fellow Finalist Melanie Bartels (HAW), 27. 

The opening event of the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour season, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast enjoyed an exciting final day of competition, culminating in Gilmore’s emphatic win in front of a raucous hometown crowd. 

In a d�j� vu version of last year’s event, the Australian and Hawaiian squared off once again in the Final, with Gilmore taking the win and the dream start to her 2010 campaign for a fourth ASP Women’s World Title.
