The world’s largest action sports festival wouldn’t be complete without an all-star event. And at this year’s U.S. Open of Surfing, held July 31-August 8 at the Huntington Beach Pier, we’ll see the return of the World Professional Surfers (WPS) All Stars.
Last year, fans voted online for their favorites and were then able to watch eight icons — including Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Mick Fanning, CJ Hobgood and Rob Machado — perform live in both the main event and in two specialty expression sessions. DANA POINT – Doheny State Beach will showcase its rich surfing history at its fourth annual Surf-a-rama from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.Â
“It’s a just a great family day to come down there and enjoy Doheny State Beach,” Surf-a-rama organizer Nyle Schafhauser said.
In previous years, the event has drawn about 1,500 people.
According to the Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association, surfing at Doheny – California’s first state beach, established on property donated by Edward Doheny in 1931 – was at its zenith in the 1950s and ’60s, when its name was used in the songs “Surfer Joe†and the Beach Boys’ “Surfin’ USA.â€Â   … Details
