Big wave surfers and their fans gathered in Half Moon Bay on Saturday to celebrate Mavericks legends and standouts of the past season.
Held in lieu of the contest which never materialized due to lackluster waves, the Mavericks Festival at the grounds of the Oceano Hotel celebrated legends of the break and the outstanding performances of the ’11-’12 surfing season from the world-famous spot located half a mile past Pillar Point Harbor.
The weight of history won’t be as heavy, but Joel Parkinson hopes it still repeats as he chases back-to-back Rip Curl Pro surfing titles at Victoria’s Bells Beach this week.
Three-time Bells winner Parkinson won an epic final at the 50th event last year, beating good friend Mick Fanning in sensational Easter Sunday surf and with a perfect 10 on his last wave.
