25-year-old Scott Stephens said he had been surfing in Eureka, California, when he was bitten by the shark and pulled under water.
‘I opened my eyes underwater and punched the shark on the side of the head until it released me,’ he said. ‘I saw a lot of blood.’
Mr Stephens suffered serious cuts in at least seven places on his body, but was lucky the shark bites missed his internal organs.
