Diehards emerge from surf covered in ICICLES as they catch waves in freezing waters of Lake Superior
Freezing temperatures and high winds would prompt few to call ‘surf’s up’ before barrelling into the icy waves of Minnesota.
But in Stony Point which dips into the western tip of Lake Superior, now’s said to be the perfect time – provided the lake isn’t entirely frozen over.

Solid 2.0m – 2.5m plus waves rolled into Sandy Bay, Whangarei today, as the third of five events on the 2013 Hyundai Tour got underway in style. Mount Maunganui’s Owen Barnes dominated the Open Men’s Division in an aggressive display of longboard surfing.
After two successful Tour stops prior to Sandy Bay, competitors in the Open Men’s kicked off the action on day one surfing through to the semifinal round. They made the most of the big surf with improving high tide conditions for the quarterfinals.
