Afghanistan has joined the International Surfing Association (ISA) as its 82nd member nation.

The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, a landlocked country located in South Central Asia and part of the greater Middle East, is officially part of the surfing world.

Although Afghanistan has no ocean waves, the country has a small population of surfers who have come together and travelled for surfing.

How heavy is a big wave? An incredible amount of water threatens the life of a big wave surfer, with just the lip of some breaks weighing more than 300 small cars. Australian Storm Surfers Ross Clarke-Jones and Tom Carroll charge some of the heaviest waves on the planet. In this clip, they break down the mathematical details on how heavy big waves actually are when athletes take them on the head.

“A lot of guys that surf big waves are a lot fitter than me, but they don’t have that natural spirit to just go. It’s just a charging mechanism or something,” says big wave charger, Ross Clarke-Jones.

HO‘OKIPA, MAUI (March 25, 2014) – Ian Walsh’s Menehune Mayhem celebrated its 11th Anniversary on Saturday, March 22nd.  The 4 to 8 foot stormy waves provided the 150 young contestants surfing in 10 divisions a highly contestable surf at Pavills Peak.  Menehune Mayhem is a surf contest that embraces the community of Maui and the scholastic achievements of its participants.

Men and women to track as the World Championship Tour returns to Margaret River after a 20-year hiatus

Stop No. 2 of the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour—the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro—will take run from April 2–3. Held at Margaret River in Western Australia, the event is now on the World Championship Tour (WCT) schedule after 20 years as a World Qualifying Series (WQS) event.
