Topsail Beach | An alligator spotted in the surf at Topsail Beach on Wednesday was captured overnight by members of the town police and volunteer fire departments. About 10 people from the two departments restrained the animal after it was spotted by a police officer at 4 a.m., said Police Chief Sam Gervase.

“I taped his mouth shut once they got him restrained,” Chief Gervase said, adding that neither the animal nor any of the officers were injured.

Snowboarder Shaun White was down to his last chance after falling during his first two runs of the men’s half-pipe competition at last month’s Winter X Games. It was the culminating event in the four day contest that drew 68,000 fans to Aspen, Colo. Once again, White delivered. He ripped off a stellar final run that included back-to-back 1080s (three complete rotations in the air) to win the gold.
