They call themselves cliff divers, but still use a platform — why?
A high rock and some deep water — that is what makes a cliff diver’s heart beat faster. Searching, finding, conquering and enjoying a cliff and the rush that goes through the body after a dive. It’s all about pure nature and brave men. When these athletes exchange the cliff for a platform and show their jaw-dropping manoeuvres from at least 27 metres in front of a huge crowd of spectators, they transform one of the world’s oldest extreme sports into high-level competition. For the first time in four years, the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series went back to the roots and held an ‘off-the-rocks’ competition on the volcanic islands of the Azores, in Portugal.
A tourist from Australia came to my uncle and asked if she could get a ride to the glacier just north of Ilulissat, Greenland, so he asked me if I wanted to be his translator. I am from another town where glaciers are fairytales, I was as much of a tourist as the Australian tourist, so I decided to join the crew.
