It started as plain curiosity. A lot like Peter Mel in the clip below, I turned to my friends in The Inertia office. “Why are Hawaiians recognized differently than Americans in the WSL?” I felt like I was left out of an insider’s secret. But, as it turns out, none of us knew.

We’d published articles in the past about how it is. Airton Cozzolino and Gollito Estredo have lots in common. Both are multi-talented, both are skilled at a number of watersports, both are World Champions and both were escaping the poverty of their hometowns, by following their dreams of success. Gollito, the fisherman´s son from El Yaque, is the Freestyle legend, but is also ripping with his Kite and SUP gear. Kite genius Airton Cozzolino from Cabo Verde rips the waves apart on his kiteboard, windsurfboard or SUP, at the highest possible level.

nissan-gt-academy-le-mans-2014Nissan has announced that four of its GT Academy gaming graduates will compete in this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours race. These include the first “virtual-to-real” race driver Lucas Ordoñez and GT Academy Russia 2012 winner Mark Shulzhitsky, who has recently worked with Onroak Automotive on the development of the new Ligier JS P2 he’ll be driving.

Since it launched in 2008, Nissan’s GT Academy has repeatedly done something previously thought to be absurd and unrealistic: It has taken people who are really, really good at Gran Turismo and put them in the seats of actual race cars. Look at Spaniard Lucas Ordoñez, who successfully went from gamer to pro driver through the program.
