{"id":85681,"date":"2013-10-23T20:44:16","date_gmt":"2013-10-24T03:44:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\/?p=85681"},"modified":"2013-10-23T20:44:16","modified_gmt":"2013-10-24T03:44:16","slug":"snowboard-video-saving-andy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\/?p=85681","title":{"rendered":"Snowboard Video &#8211; SAVING ANDY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It was the first or second day of a massive 5-day storm that dumped over 60 inches of snow on Vail, the very same storm that later that week took the life of my good friend Joe Timlin and 4 others in the deadly Loveland Pass avalanche.\u00a0 The storm that re-opened Vail and other ski areas a week after their &#8220;closing&#8221; day.\u00a0 My good friend Andy and I had a righteous day of shredding in-bounds with friends and decided to end the day by hiking for some good East Vail gnar and skiing home.\u00a0 Being a white-out day and somewhat variable snowpack, we decided to ski my preferred &#8220;safe&#8221; line, Tele-Park.\u00a0 The snow felt good and the slope was loaded with a few feet of BLOWER pow.\u00a0 Me being the more experienced backcountry traveler I sent Andy down first, agreeing to meet just above the next shelf about 150yards down the line.\u00a0 Andy sends it down a pillow line and loses it, tumbling a few times over to a tree and then down into a tree-well, upside-down.\u00a0 By the time this happened he was already disappearing into the white-out of the storm from my perspective, but fortunately I saw a tree shake off all its snow.\u00a0 And then, silence.\u00a0 I quickly knew something was wrong and skied over to that tree.\u00a0 &#8220;Rescue mode&#8221; kicked in faster than ever as I approached the tree and BARELY saw a portion of the base of Andy&#8217;s board.\u00a0 He was completely upside-down and in a tree-well with his head about 6 feet under the surface which I was skiing on.\u00a0 For about 3 seconds I thought he was unconscious as there was no movement and I heard nothing and thought &#8220;this is really really bad, but this is what I am constantly prepared for.&#8221;\u00a0 Andy quickly responded to my shouts and fortunately was alright but very very stuck as he was upside-down against the tree with his board strapped into his feet, thus locking him into a very cold and helpless grave.\u00a0 I quickly got my shovel out, started digging and got him out about 6 or 7 minutes later.\u00a0 We realized the camera was still rolling and were pleased to know that we have footage of the whole event.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/76922507?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0&amp;color=e8b71f\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\">www.stokednews.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was the first or second day of a massive 5-day storm that dumped over 60 inches of snow on Vail, the very same storm that later that week took the life of my good friend Joe Timlin and 4 others in the deadly Loveland Pass avalanche.\u00a0 The storm that re-opened Vail and other ski [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,52,73],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-85681","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-snow","category-snowboard","category-video-general"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/85681","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=85681"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/85681\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":85683,"href":"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/85681\/revisions\/85683"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=85681"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=85681"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=85681"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
