He was born into a California car family, therefore his early fascination with anything mechanical was understandable, if not expected.<\/p>\n<p>An accomplished driver, Canepa raced in period in Trans-Am, sprint cars, IMSA and others, punctuated by a third overall at the 1979 Daytona 24 Hours with co-drivers Rick Mears and Monte Shelton.
