{"id":103278,"date":"2015-02-10T20:25:22","date_gmt":"2015-02-11T03:25:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\/?p=103278"},"modified":"2015-02-10T20:25:22","modified_gmt":"2015-02-11T03:25:22","slug":"video-ice-shovel-racing-in-new-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\/?p=103278","title":{"rendered":"Video &#8211; Ice Shovel Racing In New Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Forget the Grand Prix this is the Grand SKI of races &#8211; with competitors hurtling down a mountain on a SHOVEL.<\/p>\n<p>The 9th Annual Shovel Race Championships took place on Sunday (FEB 8) at Angel Fire Resort in New Mexico, USA.<\/p>\n<p>Competitors sit on the scoop of a standard aluminium snow shovel with the handle pointed downhill and lift their hands and feet as gravity sends them down the course.<\/p>\n<p>Situated at over 8,600ft elevation in the Southern Rocky Mountains, a total of 86 daredevil entrants including men, women and children battle it out to see who completes the course in the fastest time.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Hamblin was crowned men&#8217;s champ romping the course in 15.3 seconds clocking speeds of over 65mph.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Swanson, from Angel Fire Resort, said: &#8220;Shovel racing began as a simple contest here in the 1970\u2019s when our lift operators would ride their shovels down the mountain at the end of their shifts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2oufxgpIJo4?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stokednews.com\" target=\"_blank\">Stoked News<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forget the Grand Prix this is the Grand SKI of races &#8211; with competitors hurtling down a mountain on a SHOVEL.
