Engineering students were cheerful at Utah Lake on Friday, despite strong, frigid winds that canceled their concrete canoe races. Brigham Young University professor Brett Borup told participants from schools around the country that the high winds made the water too dangerous for the races. They would have worked through rain or snow, he said, but the boat that was set to rescue any troubled boaters could not even keep itself on the water.

About 20 skateboarders, BMX bikers and in-line skaters showed up Friday for auditions to be performers at the park formerly known as Hard Rock Park.
Park officials said they did not have a number of how many skaters or bikers would be hired for the upcoming tourist season.

Graham Rahal on Saturday became the youngest IndyCar Series pole winner as he posted a quick lap of 1 minute, 02.4110 seconds on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn St. Petersburg circuit.
Rahal, the defending winner of Sunday’s Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, is 20 years, 90 days old. Marco Andretti was 21 when he captured the pole at the Milwaukee Mile on May 31, 2008.
