U-13 driver J. Michael Kelly returns to New Zealand on Thursday to drive in the 2009 Union International Montoniquie World Grand Prix Hydroplane Championship, driving “The Boss.”

Kelly is currently in 7th place with 127 points going into the final weekend of racing.

“The Boss,” hadn’t been racing on the GP circuit in the past 3 years and ran into some mechanical problems during the first weekend of competing.  According to Kelly, he lost the cowling in his first run but finished 2nd in the re-start.  In the next race, a gear box went out.

Since then, changes have been made to the boat.  They plan further testing before the weekend to determine final race set-ups…  More info

Forty years ago, power boats racing the waters of Roanoke Rapids Lake was a common sight. In just 4 months they will be back on the water for two days of inboard and outboard American Power Boat Association racing. The event will be held June 27 and 28, said Christina Gordon, eco-heritage tourism manager for the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau. 

Gordon said a similar event that has been held for the past three years in Elizabeth City draws between 7,000 to 8,000 people and its economic impact is estimated to be around $2 million, including vendors, restaurants and hotel and motel stays…  More info

The National Sand Drag Association wants to schedule races west of San Jacinto, but the site’s proximity to potential habitat-conservation areas complicates the permitting process.

Four environmental groups have alerted Riverside County that they have concerns about proposed races. Once an application is submitted for a special-events permit, they want to comment about the effects on sensitive environmental resources.
