In the office yesterday, we were all sitting around discussing the world of snowboarding. We were analyzing the impact of Shaun White. When did snowboarding go from a rebellious, anti-skiing, pants around your ankles, backwards hat wearing activity to a reputable, well-respected sport? Perhaps it’s both now, and perhaps Shaun White is the reason why we no longer associate snowboarding with punk teenagers. What’s interesting is that while we were having this conversation, we came upon Ryan Sexton’s article in the Hofstra Chronicle Online. His article goes perfectly with what we were talking about. The first UCI SX World Cup race is in the pocket. One down four to go. If the other ones are as exciting as the season opener we’re in for a treat. First of all the track, it separated the men from the boys. The second straight had a tricky section for the men while the women had three doubles to take on the second straight. The men’s line started off with a 8.8 meter long “set up” jump followed by a take off (covered with wooden sheets because it showed some soft spots) where you jumped onto a banana platform covering a 7 meter gap and then off the box into a landing which had a 7 meter gap as well. Not everyone could whistle through this section, let alone together with 7 other riders.
