All that could match the surfing on day three of the Billabong Pro, J-Bay was the drama. In classic pointbreak conditions punctuated by long lulls, local wildcard Sean Holmes wiped 12 world titles from the draw in consecutive heats.

He disposed of Kelly Slater first, with the heat coming down to the final wave exchange of the heat. So late was it, the nine time champ was in the competitor’s area before the scores were read over the PA. He spent the tense few minutes engaged in nervous chatter with friends and photographers.
