I’m driven by the thrill of the unknown and am in constant pursuit of the next rush of adrenaline, so I didn’t surprise anyone when I announced that I, along with my best friend Emmanuel De Rosnay, had plans to drive from San Francisco, California, to Rio de Janerio, Brazil.
Emmanuel and I are childhood friends from the island of Mauritius, where we grew up together like brothers. When it was time for us to head to college, I ended up studying in Paris and then found a job in San Francisco while Emmanuel went to Australia. We began planning this trip years ago, and we were finally able to make it happen last fall. Deaf American Inspires Iranian Teenager as Racers Bond On and Off the Track
 In motocross, one of the fastest growing extreme sports, riders tear through rugged terrain. The sound of the roaring engine can let riders know when to shift gears, or if competitors are gaining ground.
But that’s not the case for 19-year-old Ashley Fiolek, who’s deaf.
“Motorcycle riding is a hearing sport, really,” Fiolek told CBS News correspondent Seth Doane. “Being deaf you have to rely on the vibration.”
